What Are Instagram Collections?
One of Instagram’s newest features is the ability to save posts into your own private collections so that you can easily access them later. Users can create multiple collections based on various topics – videos, foods to try, funny memes, style inspiration, you name it.
When you find a post that you want to save, you simply have to click on the new ribbon-shaped button underneath it and choose what collection to save it to. You can then access all your collections through your personal profile page.
Does this sound a bit familiar to my fellow Pinners?
Instagram’s Rising Power
This new Pinterest-esk feature mimics the practice of creating boards and saving pins. It’s not the first time Instagram copied a feature from another social channel (aka stories). Though Instagram is far from taking over Pinterest, it’s hard to deny its power with over 700 million monthly users – that’s 4x the amount of Pinterest’s monthly users.
It’s the reason that so many businesses are turning to Instagram.
It’s exceedingly fast-growing user base and expanding advertising options make it an ideal channel for businesses to find influencers, new leads, and land sales.
Why Instagram Collections?
Because Instagram collections are private from your followers, this feature will be used in a much different manner than Pinterest. Collections are completely for internal purposes, not meant for sharing or engagement. Thus, it just makes sense for businesses to use it for their own advantage. It could potentially be a vital tool for planning and executing future endeavors.
So How Can Your Businesses Leverage Instagram Collections?
Let’s explore all the possibilities.
1. To Find User-Generated Content
I just mentioned how there are over 700 million monthly users on Instagram. Thats means there are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands of users posting content pertaining to your business or industry. There are literally opportunities all over the channel to find user content that can be repurposed for your brand.
All you have to do is search for relevant keywords or influencers to find posts that reflect your brand and messaging. Save the posts to their respective collection and you can repurpose them later or reach out to the user for influencer opportunities.
2. To Monitor Campaigns, Hashtags, and Styles
One thing that we’ve all done is spend 10 minutes scrolling through our business’ own profile page to get to that one specific photo. Whether we were looking for what hashtag was used, a comment that someone left, or data on likes/views, it was evident that there was no way to organize photos.
Well scroll no more.
Collections have made it so easy to keep track of all your campaigns and other data measurements. Think about it…you can have a collection for your posts that received negative comments. Or a collection entirely dedicated to posts that include the hashtag for the event you throw each year.
Whatever metrics that your business wants to keep track of, there can be a collection for it. Having all that information in one place lets you easily go back and see what posts were successful, what provoked the most engagement, and what you can do better next time.
3. To Gather Inspiration
Lastly, businesses can use collections to save other users’ posts simply because they find them inspiring. Just by browsing around the search page, you can find new ideas for types of images, charitable campaigns, content geared towards engagement, etc.
They say that “creativity is contagious – so pass it along…” (actually, Albert Einstein said that, so you know it’s good advice).
Great ideas stem from past great ideas. That’s not to say you should go and copy everything your competitors are doing. But it should encourage you to stay creative, competitive, and launch new initiatives of your own.
